Maglera Doe Boy to the big screen

Born Tokelo Moyakhe, the BET-nominee is set to make his acting debut alongside Adiwele hitmaker Young Stunna and Pheli Makaveli hitmaker 25K.

In an interview with Forbes Africa, Maglera Doe Boy highlights aspects of his life that inspired the film. He reflected on what he had experienced where he grew up, what he saw, and what he knows.

“When I was 11, I was rapping about the same stuff I’m rapping about right now. Socio-economic issues, street culture, where I’m from, the things I’ve seen. It’s not just a South African movie; it’s a southern African movie, and I integrate our culture with Mozambican culture,” the rapper shared.

Growing up in the township

The Klerksdorp-born rapper is known for his candour around issues in the township, uplifting young people who share a similar background, and consistently reflecting on how his experiences in the hood have shaped him. He speaks about his experiences in his music and interviews, being one of the pioneering voices in the Kasi Drill subgenre.

With this, he can acknowledge the emotional scars that come with growing up in the township.

“I spent time in the past eight to nine months, digging deep within myself. I’m 33 this year, and my take on it is that when you leave the hood, you have to heal so much before you become anyone in the world,” he reflects.
