South Africans divided over proposed renaming of under-23 national soccer team

A heated debate has erupted among South African football supporters over whether the national Under-23 men’s football team should drop its iconic ‘AmaGlug-Glug’ moniker in favour of a modern rebrand.

The conversation comes ahead of Coach Raymond Mdaka’s side taking on Algeria in an international friendly at Bloemfontein, as the squad prepares for the upcoming 2028 Olympic qualification cycle.

The commercial origins and legacy of ‘AmaGlu-Glu’

The nickname ‘AmaGlug-Glug’ dates back to a landmark 1994 sponsorship agreement with Sasol. The name was inspired by the distinct sound of pouring petrol featured in the energy company’s commercial campaigns during the 1990s.

For older generations of fans, the title carries deep nostalgia, synonymous with a golden era when the junior national team secured historic victories over football powerhouses like Brazil and qualified for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Supporters who favour keeping the name argue that, much like Bafana Bafana or Banyana Banyana, it represents a unique piece of South African sporting heritage that should be preserved.

The push for a modern identity ahead of 2028

Conversely, critics and younger fans advocate for a complete rebrand, arguing that a name rooted in a decades-old corporate campaign feels outdated for a modern national team.

Opponents of the moniker contend that the squad deserves an identity reflecting athletic excellence rather than commercial nostalgia.

As Coach Mdaka blends seasoned domestic players with emerging Under-20 talent to face Algeria, the ongoing discussion highlights the delicate balance between honouring South Africa’s rich football heritage and carving out a distinct identity for the next generation of international stars.
