21-year-old Katlego Kgaswane, who attends the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and is accused of attempted murder, has been denied bail by the Bellville Magistrates’ Court.

Katlego Kgaswane appeared in court earlier today, 28 September 2026, for his final bail application.
Kgaswane was arrested earlier this month following an alleged stabbing at a South Point student residence in Belhar, where he and the female victim were both staying.
According to EWN, Kgaswane allegedly entered the first-year student’s room during the early hours of the morning and hid underneath her bed before attacking her with a knife.
The student sustained several stab wounds and was taken to hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged.

During Kgaswane’s bail proceedings, the investigating officer opposed the application. Among the reasons presented to the court were the seriousness of the injuries suffered by the victim and the allegation that the accused went to her room armed with a knife.
The court also referred to South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis while considering the bail application.
CPUT’s Gender and Diversity Officer, Simamkele Milabhoy, attended the proceedings and said she was pleased the court denied bail, while noting that the criminal process would continue, EWN reports.
Reports say that CPUT is planning an internal disciplinary process against Kgaswane, which will continue alongside the criminal case. The university previously indicated that it was seeking his suspension, which would prevent him from returning to classes or student accommodation.
Kgaswane was denied bail and will remain in custody as the matter has been postponed to 26 October 2026 for further investigation.
