Using salicylic acid safely: What your skin needs to know

Salicylic acid is a popular skincare ingredient, particularly for people dealing with blackheads, whiteheads, oily skin and mild acne.

As a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), it helps exfoliate the skin and unclog pores, making it useful for treating certain types of breakouts. However, using too much or combining it carelessly with other active ingredients can leave the skin dry, irritated or uncomfortable.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the key is to introduce salicylic acid gradually and follow the instructions for the particular product.

Start slowly

If you are new to salicylic acid, avoid using it excessively at first. MedlinePlus recommends applying a small amount to one or two small areas for three days when first starting a product to check for a reaction.

Depending on the product and your skin’s tolerance, you may then gradually increase how often you use it. If your skin becomes dry or irritated, reduce the frequency.

Choose the right product for your skin concern

Salicylic acid is particularly useful for blackheads and whiteheads because it helps unclog pores and exfoliate the skin. It is available in different forms, including cleansers, creams, lotions, gels, pads and other topical products.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a salicylic acid cleanser may be an option. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that some salicylic acid cleansers are gentle enough for daily use, although frequency should be adjusted if irritation occurs.

Don’t apply it to irritated skin

Salicylic acid should not be applied to broken, red, swollen, infected or already irritated skin. Avoid getting the product in your eyes, nose or mouth.

If your skin is already feeling raw or peeling, give it time to recover rather than adding another exfoliating product.

Keep your skin moisturised

Salicylic acid can cause dryness and irritation, particularly when you first start using it. A suitable moisturiser can help your skin tolerate acne treatments and maintain its protective barrier.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends moisturising for people using treatments such as salicylic acid because these products can dry and irritate the skin.

Look for a moisturiser labelled non-comedogenic if you are prone to blocked pores or acne.

Don’t forget sunscreen

A simple skincare routine should include daily sun protection. Mayo Clinic recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

This is particularly important when managing acne because inflammation can contribute to dark marks known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Avoid over-exfoliating

More salicylic acid does not necessarily mean better results. Excessive exfoliation can damage the skin barrier and lead to redness, dryness and irritation.

Dermatologists recommend considering your skin type and introducing exfoliation carefully rather than assuming that everyone needs the same routine.

If your skin starts stinging, burning, becoming unusually red or peeling excessively, reduce or stop the product and allow your skin to recover.

Salicylic acid can be a useful addition to a skincare routine when used correctly. Start gradually, follow the product instructions, moisturise, protect your skin from the sun and avoid piling multiple irritating active ingredients onto the same area.
