4th Proteas quick Kwena Maphaka sidelined with hamstring injury

Kwena Maphaka is the latest seamer ruled out of the Australia ODIs, leaving the Proteas with four hamstring-related withdrawals.

South Africa have lost a fourth fast bowler to a hamstring injury before a ball has been bowled in their ODI series against Australia.

Kwena Maphaka sustained a right hamstring strain during training and has been ruled out of all three matches. Cricket South Africa said he will undergo further assessments to determine the extent of the injury.

Lizaad Williams has been called up in his place, with the Boland paceman due to join the squad on Wednesday.

Maphaka joins Kagiso Rabada, Ottneil Baartman and Lungi Ngidi on the sidelines. All three were previously ruled out of the series with hamstring injuries.

Four seamers lost to the same type of injury leaves the Proteas’ pace plans looking very different from those they had when the squad was first named.

They now have just one day to settle on an attack before facing Australia in the opening ODI in Durban on Thursday. The remaining matches are in Johannesburg on Sunday and Potchefstroom next Wednesday.
