The ability to binge-watch, stream TV shows, and indulge in endless options uninterrupted is a relatively new phenomenon in both human and television history.
However, people find themselves rewatching TV shows to the point where some even have comfort shows that they watch for… well, comfort.

Many reasons have been hypothesised as to why rewatching TV shows is so popular in this digital age.
1. Reduced cognitive load
The Newport Institute reports that the brain expends more effort for new experiences. Familiarity takes less mental energy, allowing the brain to shift into a lower-effort mode and avoid expending extra effort for processing new information.
Essentially, familiarity breeds comfort, even for TV shows. The institute explains that rewatches work best for people in careers who require sustained attention, rapid decision-making, and emotional labour.
2. Parasocial relationships and connection
The institute suggests that people can form bonds with characters from their favourite TV shows and feel social support or a warm presence. It is similar to how co-regulation works in relationships.
Furthermore, returning to characters you feel connected with can reduce feelings of loneliness and boost a sense of relational stability, at least temporarily.

3. Predictability
When watching your favourite shows, the brain can predict how the plotlines will make you feel. Thus creating somatic safety by either down-regulating anxiety responses or up-regulating mood or energy levels.
4. Avoiding decision fatigue
The number of TV show options is endless and can be overwhelming when having to choose. After returning home from a long day of work and decision-making, it can add extra weight to your brain.
Thus, going back and indulging in your favourite shows helps remove that extra weight from your mind.
