The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) recently warned motorists that delaying maintenance can lead to bigger problems and bigger bills later.

A routine service gives a mechanic an opportunity to identify worn or faulty components before they cause a major breakdown.
The AA has previously highlighted components such as batteries, water pumps, clutch kits, turbo assemblies, alternators and compressor units among parts that can fail. Some major repairs, including engines and gearboxes, can cost motorists tens of thousands of rand once parts and labour are included.

The AA also says well-maintained vehicles are important for road safety and recommends regular maintenance, such as oil changes, battery checks and tyre maintenance to help prevent breakdowns.
Brake components, tyres, lights and fluid levels should all be checked according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

You could spend more on fuel

A consistent service history can be useful when you eventually decide to sell your vehicle.
The AA advises motorists to keep vehicles well maintained both aesthetically and mechanically to help maintain their resale value. A clear service history can also give prospective buyers greater insight into how the vehicle has been cared for.
