Media powerhouse Bonang Matheba stood front and centre at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg, anchoring the sold-out L’Oréal Paris Ultimate Makeup Masterclass Vol. 3.

Her lead role reflects a fundamental shift in how multinational beauty brands engage with South African consumers: rather than relying strictly on imported global campaigns, major beauty houses are prioritising established local icons to drive live consumer experiences.

Experiential marketing and the business of local star power

The gathering at Kyalami demonstrated that modern beauty consumers demand immersive, high-value engagements over static traditional advertising. Featuring L’Oréal Paris Global Makeup Artist Harold James alongside Sub-Saharan Africa ambassador Ama Qamata, the event combined professional beauty education with live entertainment.

However, it was Matheba’s commanding presence as host that underpinned the event’s commercial pull. By leveraging an influential local figure who commands authentic trust across Mzansi, L’Oréal converted product purchases into exclusive access, requiring attendees to buy core skincare and cosmetics products to secure their seats.

The evolution of the celebrity beauty ecosystem

Matheba’s long-standing partnership with L’Oréal Paris reflects a broader trend within the African beauty market: local cultural authority is now a non-negotiable asset for international brands.

Having previously walked in L’Oréal’s global Le Défilé presentation at Paris Fashion Week and hosted prior masterclass instalments, Matheba represents a generation of African media figures who have transitioned from brand representatives to strategic business partners.

This shift allows heritage brands to ground their global messaging, “Because You’re Worth It,” within authentic local narratives that resonate deeply with African women.

Setting new benchmarks for Mzansi’s live event economy

As global beauty houses expand their footprints across Sub-Saharan Africa, the success of large-scale masterclasses proves that beauty education has evolved into lucrative live entertainment.

By pairing international technical expertise with homegrown cultural relevance, events like Vol. 3 set a new operational benchmark for beauty brands.

Moving forward, the blueprint for success in South Africa’s multi-billion rand beauty sector lies in authentic collaboration, where global investment meets local iconicity on equal footing.
