With spring upon us, it’s a good time to refresh your meals with colourful, nutrient-rich produce. Pineapple is a particularly easy addition: naturally sweet, versatile and packed with useful nutrients.

Here’s why it deserves a spot in your diet.

A natural source of vitamin C

According to Healthline, pineapple is a good source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient that supports normal immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. It also contains manganese, a mineral that contributes to normal energy metabolism and the maintenance of healthy bones.

Because pineapple is naturally sweet, it can also add plenty of flavour to meals without relying on added sugar. Like other whole fruits, it provides fibre and water alongside its natural carbohydrates.

Don’t overlook bromelain

Pineapple contains bromelain, a group of enzymes that break down proteins. Bromelain is one reason pineapple has attracted interest in nutritional and scientific research.

According to Everyday Health, filling up on antioxidant-rich foods like pineapple can play a role in countering certain health risks.

However, it’s important not to overstate its effects: eating pineapple is not a treatment for inflammation, digestive problems or other medical conditions. For everyday eating, the simplest approach is to enjoy pineapple as part of a varied, balanced diet.

Easy ways to enjoy pineapple

Spring is the perfect excuse to bring pineapple into lighter, fresher meals. Add chunks to breakfast yoghurt or oats, blend it into a smoothie, or pair it with cucumber, mint and other fresh ingredients for a colourful salad.

It also works well in savoury dishes. Try grilled pineapple alongside chicken, add it to a homemade salsa, or use small pieces to bring sweetness and acidity to a stir-fry.

South Africa is also a pineapple-growing country, with production taking place in several provinces.

The takeaway? You don’t need a complicated wellness routine to make spring meals more nutritious. Adding whole fruit such as pineapple is a simple, delicious place to start.
