Extreme summer heat leads to historically low French wine production

The summer has not been kind in France. As of 2026, French wine production dropped by 6% from 2025 due to unprecedented heatwaves and droughts, which ultimately affected the crops.

This was reported by the French agricultural ministry yesterday, the 07th of September 2026.

French wine at a historic low

France, the world’s second-leading wine producer, after Italy, has reported a historic low in decades.

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), which tracks global wine production and consumption, reported that last year’s low production had been the lowest since 1957, making the 2026 yield much lower.

The agriculture minister reported an estimated 34 million hectolitres to be produced in 2026. According to the Ministry’s statistics service, the 2026 decline is 17% below the average seen between 2021 and 2025.

As of 1 September 2026, wine production for 2026 was reported at 33.9 million hectolitres, a hectolitre being the equivalent of 100 litres. This fell short of last year’s 35.9 million hectolitres.

Difference in yield between each region

The statistics service also noted that the yield differed across various regions of France. Champagne production is expected to be cut by half compared with both 2025 and the five-year average.

However, in the southern region of Languedoc-Roussillon, production is expected to rise by 5% compared with the weak crop, following crop yield improvements. Nevertheless, production remains 8% below the 2021-2025 average.

In an effort to assist with crop yields consistently dropping, the French government announced one billion euros in emergency support for farmers. According to IOL, unfortunately, farmers in agricultural groups reported that the package fell short in comparison to their needs.
