Gauteng schools face placement crunch amidst high-volume applications

The Gauteng Education MEC, Lebohang Maile, briefed the media following the closure of the 2027 online school application. The department reported having received 805,688 applications for Grade 1 and 8. The number represents 346,877 individual pupils seeking placement for the 2027 school year.

Impact of high volume of applications

Due to the high volume of applications, Maile claims that the department was forced to rethink the placement process for students and how available spaces in schools are being used. He notes that the province needs to find innovative ways to handle the growing demands of school placements, specifically in places where schools are already under pressure.

The province has faced challenges with accommodating school pupils in areas where schools were at full capacity, creating a critical need for effective planning and capacity expansion.

Plans for e-learning and mobile classrooms

The MEC explained that the department will focus on maximising existing school capacity as they explore new ways to accommodate pupils. The solutions include, but are not limited to, public-private partnerships, mobile classrooms and e-learning solutions.

For the 2027 school year, the department will incorporate these solutions as best it can to accommodate the coming pupils in the first and eighth grades.

Application updates

The department explains that parents who submitted their applications on 4 September 2026 without all required and supporting documents have until 11 September 2026 at 12:00 to finalise their application process.

Once the applications and supporting documents have been processed, the department assures parents can start expecting placement letters and offer letters by 15 October 2026. Parents are encouraged to monitor their application status on the application website and ensure that the applications are finalised by submitting all required documents.
