Zuluboy eyes international breakthrough

According to Daily Sun, the competition offers its winner the chance to work in the studio with Timbaland, alongside a cash prize of $100,000 and an invitation to perform at a Timbaland and Orbiiit live show. Five of the selected artists will also feature on the Timbo The King & Orbiiit album.

For Zuluboy, winning would mean more than advancing his own career. The rapper believes the opportunity could help shine a global spotlight on South African hip-hop.

“I’ve relocated to America, but I’ll always be a South African and an African. Whatever I do is a reflection of who we are as South Africans,” he told the publication.

He added that a victory would mean that Mzansi music gets an opportunity to reach an international audience.

A new chapter in America

Zuluboy relocated to New York in 2024 as he embarked on a new chapter with his family.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, he said entering the competition was inspired by the experience of starting again in America and pursuing what he described as the “American dream.”

The rapper explained that he initially moved to the US with a focus on establishing himself as a father, finding work and building a new life, while continuing to pursue his musical talent.

After taking a two-year break from music, Zuluboy returned in July with his single Freedom, released to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day.

What a Timbaland collaboration could mean

A collaboration with Timbaland would represent a major opportunity for Zuluboy, particularly as he looks to establish himself outside South Africa.

The rapper said working with the acclaimed producer could help open doors for his music and demonstrate the potential of South African hip hop on the world stage.

Timbaland, who has produced hits for artists including Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliott and Aaliyah, is one of the most influential producers in contemporary music.

For Zuluboy, the opportunity also connects with his long-standing focus on incorporating South African culture into his hip-hop.
