Major League DJz star Banele Khanya Mbere has reportedly been given 10 business days to settle an outstanding tax debt of more than R1.19 million owed to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Banele and his twin brother Bandile make up Major League DJz, one of South Africa’s prominent DJ acts. The pair have built an international following through their music, performances and contribution to the growth of amapiano.

A final letter of demand has allegedly been served to Banele on 18 August 2026, calling on the DJ to make full payment within the specified period. The demand warns that failure to respond could result in further legal enforcement action, reported Sunday Times.
According to the document seen by the publication, SARS says its records show that Banele has failed to pay his tax debt for one or more tax years or tax periods.
The letter gives Banele 10 business days from the date of the demand to settle the amount. It also provides options for engaging with SARS, including discussing payment arrangements if he is unable to pay the full amount.

SARS warns of possible legal action
The tax demand does not stop at requesting payment. SARS warns that failure to settle the debt or use the available remedies could lead to additional enforcement measures.
The publication also reported that these include the possibility of SARS appointing a third party to pay the amount owed. The letter also warns that a civil judgment could be entered against Banele, potentially followed by a warrant allowing the sheriff of the court to attach and sell his assets.
The document also indicates that a natural person may, subject to the relevant requirements, apply for a reduction of the amount owed.
However, the tax demand does not allege criminal conduct by Banele, nor does it provide details explaining how the debt arose. It records the amount SARS says is outstanding and outlines the steps that could follow if the matter is not resolved.
SARS unable to comment on Banele Mbere’s tax affairs
SARS spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko said the revenue service could not discuss Banele’s individual tax affairs because taxpayer information is confidential.
The situation therefore does not necessarily mean that Banele has accepted the amount claimed. He could still dispute the debt, settle it, enter into a payment arrangement or pursue another available remedy.
