SAMA spotlight to Gold Reef City: Tyla’s unstoppable weekend

It was the kind of homecoming that felt almost tailor-made for a global superstar. For Tyla, the weekend was a celebration of just how far her career has travelled, and a reminder of where it all began.

From receiving a major international honour at the 32nd edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) in Sun City on Saturday, 15 August 2026, to taking over Gold Reef City in Johannesburg the following day, the Grammy-winning singer spent the weekend reconnecting with the country that helped shape her sound and identity.

A SAMA moment dedicated to Mzansi

Tyla’s weekend began on a high at SAMA32, where she received the AfriPure International Achievement Award, recognising her global success and contribution to taking South African music and culture to audiences around the world.

The honour was particularly significant because it marked Tyla’s second International Achievement Award at the SAMAs. She previously received the accolade at SAMA30 in 2024, putting her alongside Black Coffee as the only artists to have received the award twice.

But rather than making the moment solely about herself, Tyla turned the spotlight towards her fellow South African musicians. She brought other South African artists, including Makhadzi, Babalwa M, Zee Nxumalo, Cassper Nyovest, and Maglera Doe Boy, onto the stage.

From Sun City to Gold Reef City

There was little time to slow down.

On Sunday, 16 August 2026, Tyla returned to Johannesburg for an A*POP Takeover at Gold Reef City, turning the amusement park into a celebration of her music, her fans and her South African roots. The event was presented in partnership with South African Tourism and powered by Absa.

The event gave Tyla the chance to meet the fans who have followed her journey from local breakthrough to international pop phenomenon. The Tygers were treated to an A*POP-themed experience featuring merchandise, face painting, photographs and appearances from members of Tyla’s creative team.

Tyla’s presence delights fans

The Gold Reef City takeover was more than a promotional event. It also formed part of a broader effort to connect Tyla’s international success with South Africa’s tourism and cultural identity.

South African Tourism said the event was designed to bring the A*POP era back to Johannesburg while celebrating the local fans who have supported Tyla’s rise as one of Africa’s biggest global music exports.

Tyger’s shared their moments on social media.
