Life skills are not only about getting through everyday tasks. They can help you make better decisions, manage challenges and become more independent.

The Department of Basic Education includes areas such as personal well-being and financial literacy in its Life Skills curriculum, reflecting how practical knowledge can support everyday life. Consider these skills.

1. Budgeting

According to Nedbank Private Wealth, knowing where your money goes can make everyday financial decisions less stressful. Learn to track income and expenses, distinguish between needs and wants, and set aside money for savings and unexpected costs.

Financial literacy is recognised as an important life skill, particularly as households navigate increasingly complex financial products and services.

2. Basic cooking

Being able to prepare a few simple, nutritious meals can save money, reduce reliance on takeaways and make busy weeknights easier.

Start with versatile basics such as eggs, vegetables, rice, pasta and a protein of your choice.

3. Time management

A realistic to-do list, calendar and habit of prioritising important tasks can help prevent your day from becoming overwhelming. According to Coursera, managing your time well can reduce stress, raise productivity and increase well-being.

Learn to be punctual, allocate enough time for each task, break larger jobs into smaller steps and avoid trying to do everything at once.

4. Digital literacy

From online banking and shopping to work and communication, digital skills are increasingly essential.

Learn how to use common apps, protect your passwords, identify suspicious messages and check information before sharing it.

5. Basic first aid

Knowing what to do when someone is injured can help you respond calmly while professional assistance is sought.

Consider taking a recognised first-aid course covering basics such as CPR, burns, bleeding and fractures.

6. Communication

Clear communication can make relationships, work and everyday problem-solving easier. Practise listening carefully, asking questions and expressing your needs without being unnecessarily confrontational.

7. Problem-solving

Life rarely goes exactly as planned. According to Future Problem Solving Resources, the skill of problem-solving can be very empowering.

Developing the ability to assess a situation, consider your options and make a practical decision can build confidence and resilience. These abilities are widely recognised as core life skills.
