Things to avoid if you want healthy nails

Healthy nails are more than just a beauty statement – they can reflect your overall health. According to Everyday Health, healthy nails can also function to protect the soft part of the fingers and give fingers more strength.

While regular manicures and nourishing products can help, avoiding certain habits is just as important. Here are some common mistakes that could be damaging your nails and what to do instead.

Stop biting your nails

According to Mayo Clinic, nail biting weakens the nail structure and increases the risk of infections by exposing the delicate skin around the nail. If you struggle with the habit, consider using a bitter-tasting nail treatment or finding a stress-relief alternative.

Avoid using nails as tools

Opening cans, scraping labels or prying objects with your nails can cause cracks, splits and painful breaks. Use the correct tools instead to protect your nails from unnecessary damage.

Don’t overuse harsh chemicals

Frequent exposure to cleaning products, acetone-based nail polish removers and strong detergents can dry out nails, making them brittle and prone to peeling. Wearing gloves during household chores and choosing gentler nail polish removers can make a noticeable difference.

Limit gel and acrylic treatments

While gel and acrylic nails can look beautiful, repeated applications without breaks may weaken the natural nail. Giving your nails time to recover between treatments helps maintain their strength.

Don’t skip moisturising

Dry nails are more likely to crack and split. Applying hand cream or cuticle oil daily helps keep nails and surrounding skin hydrated, especially during the dry winter months.

Avoid poor nutrition

Your nails rely on nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc and biotin to grow strong. A balanced diet that includes lean proteins, leafy greens, nuts and eggs can support healthy nail growth.

Healthy nails start with good daily habits. By avoiding these common mistakes and giving your nails the care they need, you’ll be more likely to enjoy stronger, smoother and healthier-looking nails all year round.
