The South African Football Association (SAFA), with Danny Jordaan serving as president, has quashed claims of talks about a contract extension for Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.
This comes after SABC Sport reported that the Belgian leader was offered a one-year extension until after next year’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON), notes Soccermag.

SAFA sets the record straight on Hugo Broos rumours
In a statement shared on 22 July 2026, SAFA described the reports as false, unfounded, and misleading, confirming that no contract had been issued.
” Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement. The Association’s governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been concluded. Therefore, no decision has been taken, and no contract has been issued or approved by the National Executive Committee.”
SAFA appealed to respected media houses to “uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism” by allowing them the right of reply before publishing allegations or claims relating to its affairs.
The Association stated that it would make an official announcement on the national soccer team’s coaching positions after the appropriate internal processes are completed. Furthermore, they are also committed to transparent communication, encouraging supporters only to rely on official SAFA communication channels for accurate information regarding national team matters.

Soccer fans comment on dispelled rumours
Several South African online users gathered under SAFA’s X post to express their thoughts about the false reports and happenings within the Association.
“This creates more questions than answers. Broos’ contract expires within days, no extension has been offered or approved, and SAFA’s internal process is still incomplete. Who will coach Bafana after July?” remarked @ChiefsCentralZA.
A confused @AdvMagadze wrote, “A few weeks back you dismissed reports that he will not be retained as head coach, and today you are doing the same to contract extension reports. Which is which here?”
“Announce Pitso, we have an AFCON to win,” stated @TshepoALot.
