A fresh-smelling home can instantly make your space feel cleaner, more welcoming and comfortable. While regular cleaning is essential, a few clever fragrance tricks can help your home stay pleasantly scented throughout the day.

From popular social media cleaning hacks to simple DIY ideas, these easy tips from MattressNextDay can help keep unwanted odours at bay without much extra effort.

1. Freshen radiators with diluted fabric softener

One cleaning trick that has gained popularity online involves wiping a small amount of diluted fabric softener onto cool radiators before switching on the heat.

As the radiator warms up, it may gently release the fragrance into the room. Always make sure the radiator is cool before applying anything, and avoid using excessive amounts or products that could damage surfaces.

2. Let scented candles do the work

A scented candle remains one of the easiest ways to introduce fragrance into your home.

Place it in an open area so the scent can spread naturally through nearby rooms. For safety, never leave a burning candle unattended and keep it away from curtains, furniture and other flammable items.

3. Add fragrance to skirting boards

Some homeowners wipe a light layer of diluted fabric softener along skirting boards and door frames to leave behind a subtle scent after cleaning.

An added benefit often mentioned by cleaning enthusiasts is that fabric softener may help reduce static, which some people believe can minimise dust settling on surfaces.

Results may vary.

4. Place reed diffusers where air circulates

Reed diffusers offer a low-maintenance way to keep rooms smelling fresh for weeks.

Position them in areas with gentle airflow, such as entrances, hallways or living rooms, to help distribute the fragrance more effectively. You can adjust the intensity by adding or removing reeds.

5. Hide dryer sheets inside cushions

A clever trick shared on social media involves slipping a fresh dryer sheet inside decorative cushion covers.

Each time someone sits down, the movement can release a light, fresh scent. This can also help keep sofas smelling pleasant, especially in homes with pets.

6. Freshen the bathroom naturally

Instead of relying only on air fresheners, try adding a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the inside of the cardboard tube of a toilet roll.

The cardboard absorbs the fragrance, releasing a subtle scent whenever the roll is used without affecting the toilet paper itself.

7. Make your own air freshener

Creating a homemade air freshener is quick and affordable.

One simple option is to soak cotton balls in essential oil and place them in an open jar. As the oil slowly evaporates, it releases fragrance into the surrounding space.

8. Simmer natural ingredients on the stove

For an instant burst of fragrance, simmer a small pot of water with ingredients such as citrus slices, cinnamon sticks or vanilla.

The steam carries the aromas through your home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Be sure to keep an eye on the pot and top up the water if needed.

9. Lightly spray your curtains

Curtains naturally catch and release scents as air moves through them.

A light mist of room spray or a homemade blend of water and essential oils can help freshen the room. Opening the windows afterwards allows the breeze to spread the fragrance more effectively.

Lavender is often chosen for bedrooms because many people find its scent relaxing, while vanilla remains a popular option for living spaces thanks to its warm, comforting aroma.

10. Fill your home with the smell of cooking

Sometimes the best home fragrance comes straight from the kitchen.

Freshly baked bread, biscuits or cakes can leave your home smelling inviting for hours. Even simmering a hearty meal can create comforting aromas that make the house feel warm and welcoming.
