Mali hogged headlines when Bafana Bafana beat South Korea 1-0, leading to a historic entry into the Round of 32. He criticised individuals back home who doubted the team, telling them that they were just talking while Bafana Bafana was putting in the work.
MDN News reported that South African Football Association (SAFA) CEO Lydia Monyepao was standing behind Mali at the time and quickly reprimanded him during his mini rant, saying, “Hhayi wena, maan! (Hey, stop it!).”
After Bafana Bafana’s elimination from the tournament, Mali joined sports presenter Andile Ncube on Metro FM on 2 July 2026 to read his statement of apology.
“I address you today with humility, responsibility, and deep reflection. Before I speak about my journey or contribution to South African football, I want to begin with an apology.
“I sincerely apologise to the country, to the supporters of Bafana Bafana, to SAFA, to my colleagues, the players, the tactical team, the media, and to everyone who felt offended and disappointed by the remarks I made and the tone I used after the historic match against South Korea.”
He noted that during the heat of the moment, his emotions got the best of him, which he pointed out didn’t excuse his actions. He also condemned the death threats and harassment he and his family experienced.
Following his apology, Mali announced his Bafana Bafana departure, stating:
“I also confirm that I will no longer serve as Head of Performance Analysis for Bafana Bafana going forward. This is a decision that I made months before the World Cup, and I leave this role with so much pride, gratitude, and respect.
