South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has pledged financial incentives to Bafana Bafana following the national team’s historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

The announcement came after South Africa secured a memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A fixture, booking a place in the knockout stages of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup. The historic win has sparked celebrations across the country and renewed optimism about the future of South African football.
Gayton McKenzie pledges R5 million for every victory
In a video clip shared by eNCA on their TikTok page, Gayton spoke to the team following their achievement, announcing that Bafana Bafana would receive R5 million for every World Cup match they win during the tournament.
“I am committing to you guys, for every game that we win, we will give you R5 million,” McKenzie said, adding that the incentive would include their victory over South Korea. He also indicated that he would engage the private sector to secure additional financial support for the national team as they continue their World Cup campaign.
The minister’s promise means that a victory in their upcoming Round of 32 clash could see the team’s incentives increase substantially as they progress through the tournament.

Bafana Bafana make history
According to Reuters, Bafana Bafana’s victory over South Korea marked a watershed moment for South African football. After previous World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002 and 2010 ended at the group stage, the national team has now advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time.
