An esteemed dinner before Bafana’s match

The dinner took place ahead of South Africa’s highly anticipated match in Atlanta and coincided with the commemoration of June 16, marking the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. The evening reflected on South Africa’s journey, honoured those who have contributed to deepening ties between South Africa and the United States, and celebrated the spirit of unity and shared history.

Remarks during the evening highlighted the deep-rooted connection between Atlanta and South Africa, including the relationship that began years ago through the Atlanta partnership and has now come full circle with South Africa playing on Atlanta soil. Mayor Andre Dickens also spoke warmly about the significance of South Africa playing in Atlanta, given the city’s longstanding ties with the country.

Ambassador Andrew Young shared heartfelt reflections on his love for South Africa and the personal meaning the country has held in his life, further underscoring the powerful historical and emotional ties between Atlanta and South Africa.

Guests also included representatives from the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Felicia Mabuza-Suttle, Simphiwe Tshabalala, 2 Chainz, Jermaine Dupri, and other distinguished guests.

A special honorary moment recognised Dr Kaizer Motaung, whose historic connection to Atlanta through football continues to resonate across generations. The tribute celebrated sport as a bridge between South Africa and the United States, and as a powerful tool for cultural exchange and nation-building.

Guests were treated to South African-inspired hospitality, with a curated menu by Lorna Maseko and Chef Sosa, paired with South African wines from Steenberg and Graham Beck. The evening offered a taste of South Africa through food, wine, music, storytelling and meaningful connection.
