Whether you’re seeking multi-day wilderness treks, coastal hikes, mountain adventures, or budget-friendly travel routes, South Africa offers experiences for every type of backpacker.

South Africa’s appeal lies in its variety. In a single trip, you can hike through ancient mountain ranges, watch whales from the coast, visit vineyards, explore historic towns, and encounter iconic wildlife.

The Garden Route backpacking trail

The Garden Route is arguably South Africa’s most famous backpacking route. Stretching roughly 300 kilometres along the southern coast, it offers a combination of beaches, forests, lagoons, and adventure activities.

The highlights of this route are the towns, from the historical town of Mossel Bay to the famous lagoons of Knysna, where beautiful beaches and marine life are in abundance.

Drakensberg Grand Traverse

The Drakensberg Mountains form the highest mountain range in Southern Africa and provide some of the continent’s finest trekking opportunities. Iconic dramatic cliffs and escarpments to waterfalls and mountain streams. These mountains are perfect for serious hikers and mountain enthusiasts seeking challenging terrain.

The Wild Coast Route

Wild Coast remains one of the country’s most authentic and undeveloped regions. Rolling green hills meet dramatic cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, offering traditional rural villages, remote beaches, and rich Xhosa cultural experiences.

Cederberg Wilderness Trek

Located north of Cape Town, the Cederberg trek offers backpackers a completely different landscape characterised by sandstone formations and semi-arid wilderness.

Ancient rock art with unique geological formations is all over the trek. If you are looking for clear night skies, then the Cederberg Wilderness are the right trek for you.
