Stress has become an unavoidable part of modern life, but its effects go far beyond your mental well-being. In fact, chronic stress can affect your skin and have a noticeable impact, contributing to everything from breakouts to premature ageing. 

Understanding the connection between stress and skin health can help you better manage both.

Why stress triggers skin problems

When you’re stressed, your body releases hormones such as cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can increase oil production in the skin, which may lead to clogged pores and acne flare-ups.

This is why many people notice breakouts appearing during particularly demanding periods at work or during major life changes.

According to Harvard Health, stress can also weaken the skin’s protective barrier, making it more vulnerable to irritation, dryness, and environmental damage.

Stress and common skin conditions

Existing skin conditions often worsen during times of stress. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea are known to flare up when stress levels rise.

Researchers believe this is linked to increased inflammation throughout the body, which can aggravate sensitive skin.

Additionally, stress may trigger behaviours such as scratching, picking at blemishes, or neglecting skincare routines, further contributing to skin issues.

Can stress cause premature ageing?

The short answer is yes. Chronic stress can accelerate signs of ageing by increasing inflammation and damaging collagen, the protein responsible for keeping skin firm and youthful.

According to Healthline, this may contribute to fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull complexion over time.

Poor sleep, often linked to stress, can also affect the skin’s ability to repair itself overnight.

How to protect your skin during stressful times

Managing stress is an important part of maintaining healthy skin. Regular exercise, quality sleep, mindfulness practices and a consistent skincare routine can all help support skin health. Staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants may also help reduce the visible effects of stress on your skin.

Healthy skin starts from within—and managing stress is one of the most effective beauty habits you can adopt.
