A job interview can feel intimidating, but the right preparation can make all the difference. Taking time to prepare, practise, and manage your nerves can help you present yourself confidently and leave a positive impression on potential employers.

The information portal Job Help lists five simple steps to help you succeed in your next interview.

Do your homework before the interview

While you should research the company, its values, products, and recent achievements, you should also review the job description and understand how your skills match the role.

Potential employees can also think about common interview questions and prepare their answers. Furthermore, structure your responses using the STAR method:

  • Situation: Describe the context.
  • Task: Explain the challenge or responsibility.
  • Action: Outline what you did.
  • Result: Share the outcome and what you achieved.

Practise until your answers feel natural

Say your answers out loud in front of a mirror, and pay attention to your tone, pace, and body language. You can also ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview.

Set yourself up for success

Plan your journey and allow extra time for unexpected delays. Know exactly where the interview venue is located.

For online interviews, you can do the following:

  • Test your internet connection, microphone, and camera.
  • Choose a quiet, well-lit space where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Have any necessary documents ready and easily accessible.

Keep stress under control

It is important to take a few deep breaths before the interview begins, as slow, controlled breathing can help lower your heart rate. During the interview, pause briefly before answering questions to gather your thoughts.

Remember, interviewers expect candidates to be a little nervous.

Let your confidence shine through

Show the interviewer a natural and warm smile, and sit upright to demonstrate interest and professionalism. You should also maintain good posture to support calm breathing while showing enthusiasm for the role.

Furthermore, Job Help suggests making eye contact:

  • Around 70% of the time when listening.
  • Around 50% of the time when speaking.
