Man Crush Monday: Khuli Chana #MCM

by Amanda Ndlangisa

This week, our #MCM is the MotswakOriginator, Khuli Chana

RAPPING IN VERNACULAR

It all started out as a dare. My friend Prof Sobukwe, who is a pioneer of Motswako music, thought I had a great flow and dared me to rap in Setswana. I did one verse and it has never been the same since.

FATHERHOOD

It has been a life-changing, surreal experience that I wouldn’t give up for anything. I’ve been blessed with a beautiful baby girl (with girlfriend Asanda Maku) and I thank God for granting me this experience. I sleep a lot less because of her, but I think it has also made me a lot more patient and more appreciative of life in general.

FAME

Fame hasn’t really changed me, I’ve just learnt to value my privacy more, and time with family and friends. At times I feel like my life isn’t mine anymore. So when I get private time, I cherish it.

CHANA POWER

Chana power was an opening line to a collaboration I did. I thought it was a strong brand name that resonated with a lot of people. I started using it on social media and at shows and it has now grown into a brand identity of its own.

NEGATIVITY

I try not to pay too much attention to negative criticism and rumours. People who spread rumours aren’t interested in the truth. It becomes very draining and it would have a very negative impact on my career and me if I tried to explain myself or prove my innocence for every false accusation. I however appreciate positive/constructive criticism. I’m not perfect. I’m always willing to grow and learn from my mistakes and improve on my characteristics.

GROWTH

They say experience is the best teacher and that’s true. I’ve had lots of experiences, some good and some bad that have shaped who I am today. Every day is a new opportunity to learn from experiences that shape my future thoughts and actions. I’ve grown tremendously since starting in this industry.

DISAPPOINTMENT

I try not to take disappointment too personally. I rather reflect on it for a brief moment to see what I can learn from it and then I move on.
