Brenda, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most iconic performers, continues to influence generations of artists years after her passing. Her son Bongani has now added his voice to that legacy with a tribute that blends music, memory, and reflection.

Bongani recently released a tribute project dedicated to Brenda, which he describes as a journey of healing, remembrance, and artistic rebirth. The project reflects on his relationship with his mother while honouring her impact on South African pop culture.

Speaking through his music, Bongani channels both admiration and emotional depth, using the project to reconnect with his mother’s artistic spirit and celebrate her contribution to the industry.

Brenda, often referred to as the “Queen of African Pop”, remains a cultural icon known for hits such as Weekend Special and Vulindlela. Her bold personality and powerful voice made her one of the most influential musicians in African music history.

Bongani’s tribute reinforces her legacy, reminding fans of the lasting imprint she left on the entertainment world.

Beyond music, Bongani’s tribute also reflects a personal healing journey. He has previously spoken about the emotional complexity of growing up as the child of a legendary figure, and this latest project appears to serve as a way of reconnecting with her memory on his own terms.

The project has been described as both introspective and celebratory, balancing grief with gratitude.

“On this special day, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible love and support you all continue to show. It’s that constant energy and belief that keeps the spirit alive and the vision moving forward. To all the mothers, the matriarchs, and those who nurture and lead with their hearts—your strength is the foundation of everything we do. Thank you for the sacrifices you make and the legacies you build every single day. Wishing everyone a beautiful and Happy Mother’s Day. With love and respect,” he penned.
