Rain-proof glam: How to keep your makeup flawless during winter showers

by Zintle Mdaka

Winter doesn’t just bring cooler temperatures—it comes with unpredictable rain, chilly winds and damp air that can wreak havoc on your makeup.

From smudged mascara to patchy foundation, the struggle is real. But with the right approach, your glam can survive even the greyest, rainiest days.

Here’s how to keep your makeup looking fresh, polished and camera-ready—no matter the weather.

Start with skin that’s ready for anything

Flawless makeup begins with proper skin prep, especially in winter when skin tends to be dry and sensitive.

Hydration is key, but heavy creams can cause makeup to slide in humid conditions. Opt for a lightweight moisturiser that hydrates without leaving a greasy residue. Follow this with a gripping primer to create a smooth base and help your makeup stay put throughout the day.

Choose formulas that work harder

Not all makeup is built for rainy weather. Winter calls for long-wear, transfer-resistant formulas that can handle moisture and temperature changes.

Swap out dewy foundations for soft matte or semi-matte finishes, which are less likely to break down in damp conditions. Cream-to-powder products are also a smart choice—they blend easily but set into a more durable finish.

 Waterproof your eye look

If there’s one step you don’t want to skip, it’s this one.

Rain and wind can quickly turn a polished eye look into a smudged mess. Use waterproof mascara and eyeliner to prevent running or smearing. For eyeshadow, apply a base or primer and lightly set your lids with powder before adding colour—this helps prevent creasing and fading.

Set it and forget it (almost)

Setting your makeup properly is what separates a look that lasts from one that melts away.

Use a light layer of translucent powder on areas prone to oil or creasing, like the T-zone and under the eyes. Then lock everything in with a long-lasting setting spray to create a barrier against moisture.

The goal? A balanced, soft matte finish that won’t look dry but can still withstand humidity.

Keep lips simple and chic

Cold weather can dry out your lips, while rain can make high-shine products slip and fade.

Stick to matte or satin lipsticks for longer wear, and prep your lips with a nourishing balm beforehand. This keeps your lips smooth while ensuring your colour stays put.

Plan for quick touch-ups

Even the best routine might need a little maintenance.

Instead of layering more powder throughout the day, use blotting papers to absorb excess moisture without disturbing your makeup. Carry a compact mirror and your lipstick of choice for easy refreshes on the go.
