The hit Mzansi Wethu original reality series KwaNjomane returned, with the first episode aired Tuesday April 28 at 19:00 with a brand-new season following the dramatic and often emotionally charged lives of the Mhlongo family.

Led by matriarch Smangele Mhlongo, the show explores family tensions, personal reinvention, cultural identity and the complex dynamics that have made this series a breakout favourite among viewers. We caught up with her to share with Mzansi Wethu viewers what this new season means to her and fam, and what they can look forward to.

Q: Season 3 of KwaNjomane is here! How has the journey of KwaNjomane from Season 1 changed your life personally and that of family?

A: It has certainly changed my life and that of my family in terms of growth and how I view things that we go through as a family unit since the show started.

Q: As the matriarch, what does carrying the family name mean to you this season?

A: To me being a matriarch comes with its challenges. In all angles I am affected by having to be the decision maker, sister, a mother, the steerer of the family and an all-rounder.

Q: What’s the one thing viewers will be surprised to see in this season?

A: What viewers may be shocked to see this season is that just like anyone, I also experience deep relationship issues that a viewer might relate with.

Q: How has being on KwaNjomane shaped your perspective on family, tradition and leadership generally?

A: It has changed dramatically! As a family we have had to outline our issues and respect each other’s perspective. My spirituality has evolved from indumba to an autonomous spiritual individual. Certain moments whilst shooting became the backbone to where I am now spiritually and with my family.

Q: What has been the most challenging moment for you on the show so far and how did you overcome it?

A: The most challenging moment was detaching from my family and ubungoma, and I overcame it by choosing myself and trusting the process.

Q: Season 3 promises more drama. What can viewers expect from you and the family this time around?

A: Viewers can expect authenticity, unique family feuds and us trying to deal with our unresolved issues.

Q: If you could describe this season in two words, what would you say and why?

A: Buckle up! Brace yourselves for the never-ending feuds of the KwaNjomane Family because this is life unscripted!
