Understanding the importance of pet companionship

Pets are important in the lives of many people. As such, it comes as no surprise that a significant number of people in society likely own a loyal dog or a loving cat.

Most pet owners know how wonderful owning an animal can be, and understand that companionship is a beautiful bonding experience for both pets and owners.

According to a study reported by Four Paws in South Africa, it is estimated that 68% of South African households have a pet. Scientists noted potential physical and mental health benefits associated with having a pet at home.

The very presence of animals in homes, as well as the physical contact offered by stroking them, has positive effects on the owners.

According to the Pet Food Institute, here are some of the benefits:

They offer emotional support

It’s incredible to know just how much support animals can bring to your life. A dog or cat can help with loneliness, give owners companionship and a pet to sit with through the daunting evenings, serving as emotional support. Pets are lifesavers when it comes to depression and grief.

Pets can reduce work-related stress

Imagine leaving work stressed out and getting home to pets that are so excited to see you! That alone can help reduce whatever stress you may be harbouring. Studies show that pets help reduce stress and improve satisfaction, helping people forget about work stress.

They contribute to physical health

Beyond the emotional benefits, owning some pets can also contribute to improved physical health, especially dogs. Pet Food Institute studies have shown that pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and overall better cardiovascular health compared to non-pet owners.

Ownership of pets involves physical activity, such as walking, playing, or grooming, which in turn helps maintain an active lifestyle and combat sedentary behaviour among owners.

Responsibility

Owning a pet makes you responsible for caring for something else. This can be great, especially if you have kids, as they learn the importance of responsibility. Being responsible for a task and taking ownership of completing it gives a sense of competence, and pets provide just that.
