South Africans woke up to surprising celebrity news this week after reports emerged that reality television personality Melany “Mel” Viljoen and her husband, Peet Viljoen, had been arrested in the United States.
The couple, known for their appearance on The Real Housewives of Pretoria, were taken into custody in Boca Raton, Florida, following allegations linked to repeated shoplifting incidents at a local supermarket.
Arrest linked to alleged grocery thefts
According to police reports in the United States, Melany and Peet Viljoen were arrested on Tuesday after an investigation into retail theft at a Publix supermarket in Palm Beach County.
Authorities claim the couple allegedly stole groceries valued at more than $5,300 over a period of roughly six months, from August 2025 until March 2026. Surveillance footage and store records reportedly showed numerous items leaving the store without being properly scanned.
Investigators said the pair allegedly used a tactic known as ticket switching. This involves scanning cheaper barcodes while placing more expensive products in the shopping cart. Security footage also reportedly captured instances where full carts were taken past the checkout area without payment.
Police records suggest the items included various drinks and groceries, such as sparkling wine, mineral water, flavoured sparkling water, and soft drinks.
Both Melany and Peet were arrested during a traffic stop in Boca Raton. They were later booked at the Main Detention Centre in West Palm Beach. Authorities confirmed that each faced a felony charge related to organised retail theft and were granted bail of $10,000.
Reality TV fame and a controversial past
Melany Viljoen rose to prominence through the Afrikaans reality series The Real Housewives of Pretoria. The show, which premiered on kykNET in 2022, followed the lives of affluent women living in Pretoria and quickly became known for its dramatic storylines and outspoken personalities.
Melany’s on-screen presence, along with appearances by her husband Peet, made the couple one of the most talked-about figures on the show.
However, the pair have frequently made headlines outside reality television as well. Peet Viljoen was previously struck from the roll of attorneys in South Africa in 2011 and barred from practising law after disciplinary findings against him.
Their business ventures have also faced scrutiny over the years, including legal disputes linked to the Tammy Taylor nail franchise brand.
Social media reacts to viral mugshots
News of the arrest quickly spread online, especially after booking photos of the couple began circulating on social media.
Many South Africans reacted with disbelief, while others joked that the situation sounded like something straight out of a reality show storyline.
Across platforms such as X and Facebook, reactions ranged from shock to humour. Some users pointed out the irony of reality TV personalities becoming the subject of real-life drama overseas.
Others questioned how the situation unfolded, especially given the couple’s previously public claims about starting a new life in the United States.

An investigation still unfolding
Authorities in Florida say the investigation into the alleged retail thefts remains ongoing. Police reports indicate the incidents were linked to the same Publix supermarket in Boca Raton and occurred over several months.
For now, the story has added another unexpected chapter to the public lives of Melany and Peet Viljoen.
For South African viewers who remember the couple from The Real Housewives of Pretoria, the arrest has become the latest moment in a saga that continues to attract attention both at home and abroad.
