From London to Mzansi: Ella Mai’s rise to global fame

Ella Mai’s journey from the UK to the world stage has been nothing short of remarkable. Since breaking through in 2014, she has captured audiences with her smooth vocals, heartfelt songwriting, and infectious R&B hooks. Boo’d Up earned her the Grammy for Best R&B Song in 2019, while Trip further solidified her international reputation.

Her latest studio album, Do You Still Love Me?, released on February 6, showcases her continued growth as a contemporary R&B powerhouse. Fans attending the Sun City and Cape Town shows may get a first glimpse of her latest tracks performed live.

A weekend of music and culture

Ella Mai will headline the three-day Konka Kulture Weekend, an event set to celebrate the best in music and culture, presented in partnership with Vertex Events, who will exclusively host the Cape Town leg. The weekend will also feature Mzansi’s top artists, including Sjava, Nasty C, Zee Nxumalo, Uncle Waffles, Oscar Mbo, and Scorpion Kings, offering a mix of local flavor alongside international star power.

Sun City Convention Centre Manager, Nombuso Buthelezi, expressed excitement about welcoming Ella Mai. “Music has a unique power to unite people, creating moments of connection that transcend the ordinary. We aim to leave guests with unforgettable memories and stories worth sharing for years to come,” she said.

Similarly, Vertex Events’ head, Zizile Mtshali, highlighted the thrill of bringing a world-class R&B artist to South Africa. “As an events company, we are so excited to host Ella Mai and deliver once-in-a-lifetime live music experiences that cater to diverse audiences,” she said.

Social media buzz and anticipation

Fans have already taken to Twitter and Instagram, sharing excitement over the news. Hashtags like #EllaMaiSA and #KonkaKultureWeekend are trending among South African R&B enthusiasts. Many fans expressed joy at seeing her perform close to home, describing it as a “dream come true” and a “chance to witness music history live.”

With tickets now available online, anticipation is building for what promises to be one of the biggest R&B weekends in South Africa this year. Whether in Sun City or Cape Town, Ella Mai’s performances are set to create moments that South African fans will be talking about long after the final note fades.
