Cape Town’s pop culture calendar just got a serious power-up. Comic Con Cape Town with Capitec has confirmed that acclaimed anime voice actor Jason Liebrecht will be landing in the Mother City from Friday, 1 May, to Sunday, 3 May, 2026, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, CTICC 2. The event is proudly hosted by the City of Cape Town.

For anime fans across South Africa, this is more than just another guest announcement. It is a moment.

The voice behind the villains and legends

If you have watched My Hero Academia, chances are you recognise the chilling intensity of Dabi. If One Piece is your thing, Rob Lucci’s commanding presence probably still lingers in your mind. And for fans hooked on Solo Leveling, Beru’s voice is instantly unforgettable.

All of those characters are brought to life by Jason Liebrecht.

Over the years, his performances have carved out a special place in modern anime. He has built a loyal international following, with fans praising his ability to switch between brooding antagonists and layered, complex characters. In the world of anime voice acting, that kind of range is gold.

What fans can expect in Cape Town

Liebrecht will take part in live panel discussions during the three-day event, giving fans a rare look into the craft behind their favourite characters. There will also be autograph sessions and professional photo opportunities, offering that once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet the man behind the mic.

For many South African anime lovers, international voice actors often feel worlds away. Streaming platforms may have made anime accessible, but meeting the talent in person still feels surreal. Social media reactions following the announcement have already been buzzing, with fans counting down the days and planning their cosplay lineups.

Autograph and photo opportunity tickets are available through Howler, and fans will need a valid Comic Con Cape Town 2026 ticket to take part.

Why this matters for local anime culture

Anime in South Africa has grown steadily over the past decade. What was once a niche interest shared quietly among friends is now mainstream. Conventions are bigger, cosplay is bolder, and panel discussions are packed.

Bringing in a voice actor of Liebrecht’s calibre signals how far the local scene has come. Comic Con Cape Town is not just importing talent; it is affirming that South African fans are part of the global anime conversation.

And in a city known for its creativity and flair, hosting this moment at CTICC 2 feels fitting. For three days in May, Cape Town will once again become a playground for comic, gaming, and anime enthusiasts, with Jason Liebrecht right at the heart of the action.
