Miguel Cardoso’s coaching future hangs in the balance as Mamelodi Sundowns face decisive CAF tests.
Mamelodi Sundowns has been delivering below-par performances since the start of the season.
The team delivered a poor performance against Gomora United last Wednesday. Although they won 2–1, the Portuguese coach was realistic enough during the post-match interviews and stated that “One day, I will go”. It seems like Cardoso will eventually go if the team continues to perform this poorly.
Unfortunately for Miguel Cardoso, he faced two CAF Champions League matches that were a must-win for the team. Sundowns will face St Eloi Lupopo and MC Alger for their final two CAF Champions League group-stage matches. With these games, they must win at all costs to make sure they secure progression to the knockout stage of the premier continental showpiece. If they fail to do so, there’s a possibility Cardoso may face the wrath of the club’s hierarchy.
According to IOL, “Given that reality, winning the league – the Betway Premiership – is regarded as customary for the club, with their dominance growing in leaps and bounds after securing the last eight titles in succession. Therefore, the trip to Lubumbashi to face St Eloi Lupopo on Sunday is set to be the first real test in determining Cardoso’s future at the club, before they host Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger on Friday night in Pretoria”
