Internet reacts to Big Brother housemates’ transphobic remarks over bathroom use

Tension erupted in the Big Brother Mzansi House after Ramona Maloy reportedly made transphobic remarks to Langelihle Gumede, popularly known as Ilano and noted as the first transgender in the house.

This is after Ramona allegedly told Ilano to go use the men’s bathroom, because she has only been a woman for ‘two minutes’, leaving the internet in a frenzy. One of the housemates, Neliswa Ngada, stood up for Ilano after the discrimination, and called out Ramona for being transphobic.

Other internet users alleged that Thandeka Tshabalala also used the transphobic remarks towards Ilano while sitting with Ramona, after Liyema ‘Liema’ Pantsi hid her weave. This incident left an awful taste in the mouths of some internet users, because they believe that it is unacceptable and inhumane.

X (formerly Twitter) users weighed in:

Ramona and Koki being transphobic towards Illano. I love Neliswa for standing up for what’s right. What Ramona said is so inhumane.#BBMzansiS6 #BBMzansi pic.twitter.com/rNGEYFEx0z

Ramona’s comment that Ilano has “only been a woman for two minutes and must use the mens toilet” is deeply vile and unacceptable. In a world where we are actively fighting for inclusivity and respect, saying this simply because Ilano is transgender is harmful and discriminatory.… pic.twitter.com/n5492e3Zte

Transphobic comments encourage hatred and prejudice towards the community btw. Moving the cameras will not stop us from talking about what Thandeka and Ramona said about Ilano, if you’re going to cast the LGBTQ+ community, protect them, don’t dehumanise them @BBMzansi #BBMzansiS6 pic.twitter.com/7s2Ebj4aRE

And mind you,Ramona ONLY said it because Thandeka said it earlier . That’s exactly the damage of not holding people accountable will do. Now everyone thinks it’s okay to throw such words around #BBMzansi6 @BBMzansi @Mzansimagic @BCCSABeSafe https://t.co/SZC7bHzn75
