Kim Kardashian defends North West’s bold fashion choices
At just 12 years old, North West has become a style icon in her own right—though not without controversy. From brightly coloured braids to fake face tattoos, finger piercings, and outfits that regularly turn heads online, the Kardashian daughter’s fashion choices continue to spark debate.
Her mother, reality star Kim Kardashian, recently addressed the scrutiny in a candid chat with her sister Khloé Kardashian on a podcast, explaining why she lets North explore her individuality.
Growing up in the spotlight
Kim acknowledged the challenges of raising a child under constant public observation. “No one knows unless they’re in my shoes what I’m dealing with and how we have to manage certain things from the outside world or even close in our life,” she said.
The youngest Kardashian has gone viral for her bold looks multiple times, with her latest finger piercings generating both admiration and criticism. While many fans celebrate North’s confidence and creativity, some question whether she is being allowed to grow up too fast.

Balancing freedom with rules
Kim was quick to clarify that letting North express herself doesn’t mean she’s shirking parental responsibility. “The one misconception people might have is like, ‘Oh, she’s trying to be her bestie and lets her get away with a lot,’” Kim explained. “No, Northie actually has a lot of rules. The one area is I do let her express herself, and I do let her do that.”
The SKIMS founder also emphasized that North’s bold fashion sense is innate, not a product of TikTok or internet fame. “She’s been, it’s funny—people are like, ‘Oh, this blue hair all of a sudden,’ or her fake piercings. I have pictures of her in first grade, pre-K, with a fake septum ring, green braids, pink braids. She really is who she is and always has been that girl. Unapologetically. And so I nurture her.”

Embracing individuality in a judgmental world
For Kim, letting North experiment with style is part of nurturing her daughter’s identity, even as rules and boundaries remain in place. Growing up in a world where every outfit is dissected online isn’t easy, but the Kardashian matriarch is clear: supporting North’s self-expression is a priority.
“Her personality, her creativity, and her confidence are something I want to encourage,” Kim said. “I make sure she knows what she can and cannot do, but in terms of expressing herself, she’s free.”
As North continues to make waves with her fearless fashion choices, it’s clear that the young Kardashian is carving out her own identity one braid, piercing, and outfit at a time.
