Gayton McKenzie defends Gary Player following BEE comments

by Sergio Miller

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has recently defended the legendary golfer Gary Player.

This week, the former professional golfer found himself on the wrong side of many South Africans following his comments at his 90th birthday party at Sun City.

Speaking to reporters on the day, the 90-year-old said that his biggest wish is that the South African government come to a realisation that it is time to remove the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) legislation.

He added that it was unfair for citizens such as himself to work towards something, only for a portion of it to be taken away by someone else.

“They could come in and take it. That means they are stealing it. So we are discouraging people from investing. We have to get rid of that law.”

“They are not prepared to listen. You have got to get rid of this BEE system.”

These comments have since landed the renowned golfer in hot water with the South African public. However, after enduring much scrutiny on social media platforms, Minister Gayton McKenzie has had his say on the matter.

Taking to social media, Gayton defended Gary, criticising the public for their ignorant remarks.

“Gary Player has done more for charity and this country than all of those combined who are labelling him. Differ with people without shaming them.

He added, “I love Gary Player”.
