Just days after being crowned the new Miss South Africa, Qhawekazi Mazaleni has finally shared insights into the life-changing experience.

This past weekend, South Africa had the opportunity of witnessing the official crowning of a brand-new head girl, in the form of 24-year-old Qhawekazi.

With a passion for inclusivity in education, Qhawekazi is also a part of history by becoming the second Miss South Africa title holder to hail from the Eastern Cape after Zozibini Tunzi.

A few days have now passed since the memorable day, and she can now finally make sense of what was a crazy initial 24 hours.

“As soon as my name was called, I was completely shocked and in disbelief. Then there was just this overwhelming sense of gratitude.”

She adds that being named the new Miss South Africa is a validation of the hard work she has put in to reach the point, and encourages others to be authentic and do the same.

Not only is she the new ambassador for the organisation but is also a strong in addressing unemployment through literacy.

Speaking about what she plans to achieve during her reign, she said:

“I am a huge advocate for inclusive education. When children are able to start learning at the foundation in their home language, it sets them up for high school success, tertiary success and also helps with employability skills.

She says that the aim is to address unemployment at its root, which is through literacy.

Not only is Qhawekazi a proud author, but also currently pursuing her Master’s degree in speech therapy. During an interview on Expresso Show, she explained that children often respond more effectively when the content is offered in their home language.
