Thembi Kgatlana’s Homecoming: Banyana Star Opens Up About Her Return

by nikita.m

Banyana Banyana’s Thembi Kgatlana is back — and this time, she’s not just returning to the pitch, she’s returning with purpose. The national team forward, who missed the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) earlier this year, says she’s in great spirits as she re-joins her teammates ahead of their crucial second-leg clash against DR Congo in Soweto.

A Comeback Rooted In Clarity And Gratitude

After months of speculation surrounding her WAFCON absence, Kgatlana finally addressed the rumours, confirming that her withdrawal had nothing to do with tensions with the South African Football Association (SAFA).

“I never had personal issues with anyone,” she explained. “It was something private, something I needed to take care of with my family. The federation and my club were incredibly supportive through it all, and I’m grateful for that.”

Her honesty and calm resolve have resonated with fans, many of whom took to social media to welcome her back, expressing excitement to see the 28-year-old back in green and gold.

Eyes On DRC: “We’re Playing For Our Fans”

Banyana held DR Congo to a 1–1 draw away last week, but Kgatlana believes the team’s preparation and home-ground advantage could make all the difference tonight.

“We’ve had time to regroup and plan properly,” she said. “We already know their strengths and weaknesses from the first leg. Playing at home gives us confidence — we’re playing for our fans and for South Africa.”

The return of several key overseas-based players, who joined the camp late last week, has further boosted morale. The squad is determined to deliver a strong performance and secure qualification to the next stage.

A Symbol Of Resilience And Unity

For many South Africans, Kgatlana’s return represents more than just another cap — it’s a story of resilience, transparency, and growth. Her ability to balance personal challenges while maintaining professionalism has only deepened the respect she commands among her teammates and supporters alike.

As the floodlights switch on at FNB Stadium this evening, Kgatlana’s comeback feels like a full-circle moment: a reminder of what it means to lead by example — both on and off the pitch.
