The University of Malaya on Monday conferred an Honorary Doctorate in International Relations on President Cyril Ramaphosa during a special convocation at the university’s Dewan Tunku Canselor.

Ramaphosa received the degree as part of a working visit to Southeast Asia that included his participation in the Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The Presidency said the trip aims to advance bilateral relations, with a particular focus on trade and investment. (Government of South Africa)

The Chancellor, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, presented the honour, reports NST Online. University Malaya said it recognised Ramaphosa’s contributions to global diplomacy and international negotiation and his work on the world stage.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ramaphosa framed the award as more than a personal accolade. He said the honour “recognises the struggle of the South African people for democracy and freedom” and accepted it on behalf of the nation.

The president delivered a public lecture on South–South diplomacy, urging renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation amid global uncertainty. Observers say the visit could open fresh avenues for South African exporters and investors in the region.
