Somizi breaks his silence on Ngizwe saga

by Zintle Mdaka

Media personality Somizi Mhlongo recently made time to respond to Ngizwe Mchunu’s social media rant about gay men wearing traditional attire.

This came about after a video circulated on TikTok, and subsequently caught his attention, leading him to incite homophobic attacks and instructing Somizi to take the LGBTQIA+ community away from South Africa.

The community did not take this lying down, and have reported Ngizwe to the Human Rights Commission which has confirmed that it is working on the matter.

Responding to the matter, Somizi took to his Instagram page and urged the LGBTQIA+ community members to not allow attackers to make them emotional, and fight back if there is a need.

“With regards to what is going on right now, the homophobia that is happening, my caution to you is, don’t allow them to make you emotional. You know who you are, and if you know who you are, you are unshaken. Don’t stoop to their level, and don’t insult them back. All you need to do is just to be yourself and be decent.

“But also I’m not inciting violence, but also there needs to come to a point where they know who we are, and we are not backing down. If there is a need to fight, there will be a fight, just be ready,” said Somizi.

Recently, Ngizwe mobilised a group of people and led them to a march against the LGBTQIA+ community members at Kwa Mai Mai, Joburg. However, he was denied entry by the establishment’s leaders.
