South African television has made history with five International Emmy nominations, the most ever for an African country in a single year, Cape {town}Etc reports.

The nominations span drama, documentary, comedy, sport and children’s programming and place South Africa third overall on the 2025 shortlist behind the United Kingdom and Brazil.

The titles named by the International Academy include:

  • Catch Me a Killer
  • Chasing the Sun 2
  • Koek
  • School Ties, and Play Room Live

MultiChoice accounted for four of the nominations, a milestone that the broadcaster said reflects growing investment in local production and talent. Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice’s director of content for English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, congratulated producers and creatives for bringing South African stories to an international stage.

For actors, writers and crew the nominations offer both recognition and opportunity. Charlotte Hope earned a nod for Best Performance by an Actress for her role in Catch Me a Killer, a nomination that acknowledges intense preparation and the courage to tell difficult stories.

Play Room Live’s nod in the Kids: Factual and Entertainment category highlights the range of local output from children’s formats to heavyweight drama (iemmys.tv).

Industry observers say the run of Emmy shortlistings in recent years signals stronger international appetite for South African voices and perspectives. The winners will be announced in New York on 24 November 2025.

This year’s nominations prove that South African storytellers are working at world-class levels and their work is connecting with audiences far beyond our shores.
