SIU’s R2 billion fraud expose sends shock waves across South Africa

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has dropped a bomb that puts Mkhwanazi’s explosive briefing to shame, revealing that their probe into Tembisa Hospital has uncovered at least three coordinated syndicates behind the looting of over R2 billion.

South Africans are currently functioning at a few ‘yhos‘ per minute due to the current state of chaos that is the legal and political space. These cries of disbelief can be attributed to several factors, including the SIU’s recent revelation regarding its inquest into Tembisa Hospital, which was prompted by whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who paid with her life trying to expose the corruption.

Although General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive media briefing gave South Africans an idea of how deep the rot of crime and corruption has infiltrated the country’s governance, it did not paint the full picture. Currently, citizens are forced to watch a real-life movie play out, where the people and organisations entrusted to serve and protect them have turned into the very monsters responsible for their suffering.

Accompanied by Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, Gauteng MEC for Health Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, SIU head Advocate Andy Mothibi recently took to the podium to report back on their work into the corruption and maladministration that has taken place at Tembisa Hospital.

According to Advocate Mothibi, there are at least three coordinated syndicates, one of which is headed by Hangwani Morgan Maumela and Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, who have both quickly become people of interest to the public as the veil of corruption slowly uncovers. Investigators found that this entity, coined the Maumela syndicate, funnelled more than R816 million through transactions of under R500k to avoid raising any flags.

This revelation has garnered some passionate reactions and responses from frustrated citizens who are calling for an end to the corruption once and for all. These citizens have expressed shock and disgust towards criminals like Cat Matlala; they attribute a lot of the ills in the health department to this corruption, highlighting how this not only affected the unemployment rate, but has also directly affected people’s health and lives.
