WATCH: Thabo Mbeki hails Mkhwanazi for unmasking corruption

by Staff Bona

Former president Thabo Mbeki has praised KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for exposing corruption within the criminal justice system.

Nhlanhla’s claims that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is linked to crime syndicates are under investigation at the Madlanga Commission.

Speaking at an ANC political school in Durban on Saturday, Mbeki said the ANC has been infiltrated by people seeking power for self-enrichment and welcomed efforts to uncover wrongdoing.

“I’m very, very glad that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had the courage to speak out on this thing. Because at last now we have the possibility to expose the rot through the Madlanga Commission.

“So at least the country has a picture of what the real state of affairs of the criminal justice system is. Who are these criminals who are doing all sorts of terrible things? Who are they, where do they come from, and how do they operate? To answer those questions, because in the end, there must come a comprehensive response to the issue of crime and corruption in the country,” Mbeki said.

At the same event, ANC provincial task team convener Jeff Radebe announced sweeping reforms aimed at organisational renewal, including requiring all members to reapply for membership, lifestyle audits, stricter admission criteria, probation for new members, political education, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
