Sorry, not sorry! Tyla claps back at Tiwa Savage on Global Citizen stage

In true South African fashion, global star Tyla used her time at the recent Global Citizen stage to send a clear, unapologetic message to Tiwa Savage, who took the liberty to apologise on her behalf for previous comments on her race.

Nigerian songstress, Tiwa Savage recently made headlines when a clip of her interview with Charlamagne tha God and company went viral across various social media platforms. In the clip, Tiwa is asked about her opinion regarding Tyla proudly identifying as a coloured woman, as opposed to black. This comes after some immense controversy surrounding these sentiments, particularly with the American audience who felt as though that was an insensitive choice by the superstar.

As they have previously done when their popiano princess has been under any kind of attack or facing controversy, loyal Tygas and proud South Africans quickly came to Tyla’s defence, highlighting that Tiwa stepped out of line commenting on South Africa’s racial dynamics as a Nigerian. Furthermore, these users cite the importance of standing up against the erasure of her coloured culture by highlighting how it was normal for African global stars to do so in the past.

Ironically, while performing her new song Mr Media, which she revealed is a song directed to those who have continuously scrutinise her publicly, Tyla took the liberty to address Tiwa directly by letting her know that her apology was unnecessary, as she remained unapologetic.

” Sorry, I’m not sorry heh,” the youngster said as she stood on business.

This came as a surprise to her fans and the public at large, as she has garnered a reputation of keeping away from controversy, despite her name attracting it constantly.
