Greek National Opera Ballet Makes Historic South African Debut at Dance Intersect 2025

by Zaghrah Anthony

A Historic Night for South African Ballet

For the first time, South African audiences will experience the artistry of the Greek National Opera Ballet (GNO) as part of Dance Intersect 2025. This landmark debut will light up Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre this October with the contemporary ballet Les Nuits d’été, choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos and set to the evocative music of French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz.

The performance draws inspiration from the poetry of Théophile Gautier, exploring love in its most poetic and idealised form. Rigos weaves classical ballet with modern romanticism, creating a fluid, emotionally charged narrative that reflects the complexities of human relationships.

“Les Nuits d’été makes us reminisce about nights of love, dreams, and life itself,” Rigos explains. “It captures the delicate interplay of light and shadow, a kaleidoscope of emotions both timeless and contemporary.”

An Artistic Feast for the Senses

Dance enthusiasts can look forward to more than just technically brilliant choreography. Costumes designed by Deux Hommes complement Rigos’s vision, enhancing the visual storytelling and immersing audiences in a rich tapestry of colour and movement.

Anderson Carvalho, founder of Dance Intersect and Artistic Director of ACDC, expressed the significance of hosting the GNO.

“Bringing the Greek National Opera Ballet to South Africa is an honour,” he says. “This production represents international excellence, offering our audiences a rare opportunity to witness ballet where classical beauty meets contemporary expression.”

Dance Intersect 2025: A Global Stage

Dance Intersect, produced in partnership with Elvis Sibeko Studios and the Artscape Theatre Centre, has built a reputation for celebrating both local and international dance. The festival creates a space where cultures intersect, showcasing the diversity of movement while promoting dialogue between South African talent and world-class companies.

This year’s collaboration with GNO exemplifies the festival’s mission: to transcend borders and provide audiences with performances that are as emotionally resonant as they are technically masterful.

Supporting a Cultural Exchange

The production enjoys strong backing from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (through Dutch development policy), Tristan Finance, the Van Ewijck Foundation, and the Embassy of Spain in South Africa. Their support not only underscores the importance of cross-cultural collaboration but also ensures that audiences experience a truly global performance.

Why This Performance Matters

  1. First-Ever South African Appearance – GNO’s debut is a landmark in the country’s cultural calendar.

  2. Blending Tradition and Modernity – Rigos fuses classical ballet with contemporary interpretations and Romantic-era music.

  3. A Celebration of Global Collaboration – With international support and South African production expertise, the performance is a cultural dialogue on stage.

For Cape Town audiences, Les Nuits d’été promises more than a ballet—it’s an invitation to experience love, emotion, and storytelling through movement in a historic and unforgettable setting.
