South Africa’s love affair with brandy has just been given a fresh spark. The South African Brandy Foundation has officially relaunched the South African Brandy Route, unveiling a collection of new experiences designed to bring locals and tourists closer to the country’s liquid heritage.
A Heritage Journey With A Modern Twist
The Brandy Route connects 19 Brandy Homes across the Western Cape, from historic cellars in Stellenbosch to contemporary cocktail hubs in Cape Town. The relaunch goes beyond a fresh coat of paint, introducing digital tools to help visitors plan their trips, along with improved training for staff and upgraded tasting spaces.
Christelle Reade-Jahn, Director of the South African Brandy Foundation, explained that the relaunch is about blending history with modern appeal. “Every Brandy Home and Brandy Hub tells a story – from old cellars in the winelands to trendy city bars. We want visitors to experience that heritage while also discovering the versatility of brandy in today’s culture.”
What’s New On The Route
Some of the most exciting updates include dessert and chocolate pairings that showcase just how adaptable South African brandy can be:
-
Boplaas, Calitzdorp: A newly revamped tasting room with a relaxed lounge setting
-
Boschendal, Franschhoek: Aged XO brandy paired with South African favourites like Malva pudding, peppermint crisp tart and milk tart
-
Tokara, Helshoogte Pass: XO brandy paired with handmade chocolates
-
Van Ryn’s Distillery, Stellenbosch: Guided tours and tastings featuring chocolate pairings
Each stop is designed to feel like more than a tasting — it’s about storytelling, heritage, and a warm South African welcome.
Brandy Tourism: An Untapped Treasure
South Africa is already world-famous for its wine routes, but brandy has often lived in their shadow. The Brandy Foundation sees this relaunch as an opportunity to change that. Reade-Jahn described brandy tourism as “an untapped treasure,” one that not only deepens the connection between place and culture but also gives visitors another reason to explore the winelands and beyond.
A Fresh Reason To Explore The Cape
For both seasoned brandy lovers and curious newcomers, the South African Brandy Route now offers something more immersive, indulgent and proudly local. Whether you’re sipping a glass of XO alongside a peppermint crisp tart in Franschhoek or relaxing in a refurbished tasting lounge in Calitzdorp, the route promises a journey into South Africa’s cultural and culinary soul.
