‘Nothing prepares you for the pain’ – Rethabile Khumalo on celebrating her birthday without her mom

by Zintle Mdaka

Award-winning singer Rethabile Khumalo recently shared her pain as she celebrated her first birthday without her mother.

The Ntyilo-Ntyilo singer candidly shared that she misses her mother, late musician Winnie Khumalo. She shared that celebrating the day you were born without the person who gave birth to you is nearly impossible.

Rethabile lost her mother in January, after she suffered a short illness at the age of 51. Winnie left a rich music and television legacy, and was a household name for her powerful voice and versatile performances. She released numerous solo albums, and was once the back-up singer to Brenda Fassie.

Recently Rethabile took to her Instagram page to ‘celebrate’ her birthday. Captioning her post, she said: ” Nothing prepares you for the pain you feel on the first day without your mother. ‘Celebrating’ the day you were born without the human who gave you life is nearly impossible. Damn, I miss my mom,” she penned.

Another user said: “Happy birthday nana. God bless you with everything you want and need in Jesus name.”

While another one said: “A blessed birthday to you, and may this day also bring you comfort and fill you with memories you shared with your mother.”

Rethabile made a dream she shared with her mother a reality by opening her mobile kitchen after her mom passed away. She named her food joint RK Food, and it is operational in Protea Glen, Soweto.
