Unlike the older generations, South Africa’s youngsters, aka ‘ama2000’ have proven to have no fear or reservations when it comes to exploring their interests and passions. Championed by young women, Mzansi’s skating community continues to grow and thrive.

South Africa is slowly emerging as a cultural hub where the rest of the world draws inspiration from the rich and vibrant culture Mzansi boasts. For any African country, this is a significant feat, as historical context reveals that the continent’s contributions to global pop culture were often overlooked.

Platforms such as TikTok have allowed people with unique interests to find each other, connect and form their niche communities. The skating sport and community continues to grow, as interest has seeped into townships and villages, and has opened up a whole new untapped market.

Here are a few of Mzansi skater chicks that have been making waves on social media:

South Africa’s skating community is filled with diverse and interesting characters who have found small niches within the broader space. User @Scarface.morningstar on Instagram and TikTok has established herself as one of the legit skater chicks to follow for the young girls looking for some inspo. Not only does she keep her followers updated with her flashy tricks and skills, but she has separated herself from her peers by highlighting her life as a young skater mom.

Recently, a controversial clip of her cruising through her neighbourhood on her skateboard, child’s stroller in her hands went viral, and garnered some mixed reactions

Choccymono

Up next is Choccymono, a young and dynamic skater who is full of life, energy and exudes black girl magic in every sense. This youngster is showing everyone that despite popular belief, skater chicks can be baddies too, and aren’t all just tomboys.

Nelo

If you’re looking for a skate-fluencer (yes we just made that up…we think) that will give you an authentic look into life as a skater in South Africa, Nelo is your go-to. Her videos have a sort of nostalgic feel, as she takes her followers along while she cruises through the bustling city of Pretoria.
