Nasrec buzzed with energy as tens of thousands of fans, cosplayers, and pop culture enthusiasts descended on the venue for Comic Con Africa 2025, the continent’s largest festival of comics, gaming, anime, and cosplay. With at least 70,000 attendees expected over four days, the event proved that in South Africa, fandom is more than just a hobby, it’s a community.
Celebrities Fall for South Africa’s Warmth
US stars were quick to praise the country’s hospitality. Misha Collins, famous for his role as Castiel in Supernatural, described his short visit as eye-opening:
“The people I’ve met have been lovely, warm, inviting, and gracious. I visited a shanty town outside Cape Town where kids were singing beautiful South African songs, it was breathtaking.”
Jessie T. Usher, known for The Boys, brought his family and highlighted the unique friendliness of South Africans:
“Walking down the street here, people engage with each other. They make eye contact and ask how you’re doing—it’s very different from Los Angeles.”
Even Dan Fogler of Fantastic Beasts fame, who has family ties to South Africa, noted the country’s charm and pleasant climate, defying his cinematic expectations of the continent.
Local star Chioma Umeala, who plays Nojiko in Netflix’s One Piece, was also present, bridging international fandom with South African talent.
Ubuntu in Action: A Safe Space for Fans
For many attendees, Comic Con Africa is more than cosplay and gaming, it’s a space of unity. One fan told The Citizen:
“Just like rugby brings people together, Comic Con allows South Africans of all races and classes to forget social issues and have fun together.”
Gaming Takes Center Stage
Gaming was a major draw, with Nintendo claiming a massive area to showcase the Switch 2 and titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Ronelle Crighton, Nintendo Africa’s senior marketing manager, noted the Switch 2’s versatility compared to PlayStation and Xbox.
Fans also had chances to win PS5 consoles thanks to the Doritos Crunch Crew, who added to the excitement by hosting live performances by Nasty C.
Acer Africa launched its 4K UHD Google TV Box, transforming TVs into AI-powered entertainment and gaming hubs, while Eduvos highlighted courses like the Higher Certificate in Information Systems (Game Design and Development), paired with e-sports competitions like the Marvel Rivals tournament.
Interactive Entertainment and Iconic Mascots
Disney+ drew huge crowds with immersive experiences from its hit shows, including the “Homer Simpson Hedge” for meme-lovers. AXE and M-Net kept fans engaged with merchandise giveaways and recreations of iconic sets.
A highlight of 2025’s edition was seeing mascots and gaming legends come to life in the aisles, from Noodle and Bun to Mario and Luigi, bringing joy to both kids and adults alike.

Comic Con Africa 2025 wasn’t just about costumes or consoles; it was a testament to South Africa’s vibrant, welcoming spirit. International visitors left impressed with the friendliness, creativity, and energy of the local community, while South African fans found a safe space to celebrate shared passions.
