‘Half of you and half of me’ – Springbok Edwill van der Merwe and wife Nadine announce pregnancy

First, he was a professional rugby player, then husband, and soon Springbok star Edwill van der Merwe will be adding yet another title to his growing list – Dad.

Life in the fast lane has been nothing short of rewarding for the 29-year-old speedster. Since moving to the Lions in Johannesburg, his continuous man-of-the-match performances have been ones that highlight reels are made of. Fortunately enough, his personal life has seen the same amount of progress.

This comes after he and his wife Nadine recently revealed that they are pregnant.

The couple shared the news in an Instagram post, in the form of a reel. In the post, the two can be seen spending some quality time together on the beach before Nadine eventually shows off her baby bump and runs to the sand to engrave their new titles, “MOM + DAD”.

Captioning his post, Edwill wrote: “Half of me and half of you.”

Users later flooded the comment section to congratulate the two. Among those was his mother Chareldine, who wrote: “Can’t wait to meet our little sweetpea. I am not crying.”

After spending four years in Gauteng, the couple has relocated to Durban, where Edwill recently signed with the Sharks. This will see him play alongside a team packed with familiar faces like Siya Kolisi, Makazole Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am, Eben Etzebeth, and many more, all of whom also represent the national team.

Since making his Springbok debut against Wales at Twickenham Stadium (now Allianz Stadium) in England, the Kylemore native has cemented himself a spot in the Bok team.

His performances this year have lived up to expectations and have seen him score 4 tries in two matches. This has led him to further secure a spot in coach Rassie Erasmus’ reduced side, who will play against Australia in the Rugby Championship.
